2. When Therapy Feels Like Too Much: A Gentle Approach to Trauma Healing

Why Therapy Can Sometimes Leave You Feeling Tired or Emotional (Part 2 of 4)


Another thing people sometimes notice when they begin doing deeper work in therapy is that they feel surprisingly tired, foggy, or emotional afterwards.

You might find yourself thinking:

  • "Why do I feel worse?"

  • "Why can’t I stop thinking about what we talked about?"

  • "I went home and fell immediately to sleep"

  • "I don't want to do anything this week- I just want to stay at home"

This can be a normal experience after working on distressing, important, or meaningful memories. The good news is: it doesn’t mean therapy is making things worse. It actually means your brain is doing important work. When we explore meaningful experiences in therapy, especially ones connected to past memories, beliefs, or emotions, your brain begins processing things behind the scenes.

It’s a little bit like opening filing cabinets that haven’t been touched in a while.

Memories start linking together; new understanding begins to form and your emotional brain and thinking brain start communicating in new ways. (Interesting that MRI studies after EMDR and EFT Tapping treatment for trauma demonstrate structural brain changes) .

All of this takes a lot of energy.

Your nervous system is reorganising things that may have been sitting unresolved for years.

So it’s very normal to feel:

• emotionally tender

• reflective

• tired

• or a little bit raw for a day or two after a session.

This doesn’t mean you’re going backwards. More often, it means your brain is integrating what you’ve explored. Over time, as your system becomes more familiar with this process, it usually starts to feel less overwhelming. Many people notice they begin to feel clearer, lighter, and more grounded after sessions.

Healing isn’t always a straight line. But when therapy is paced safely, your brain has a remarkable capacity to process and heal.
